दैवासुरसम्पद्विभाग योगः Chapter 16

अथ षॊडषॊध्यायः दैवासुरसम्पद्विभाग योगः CHAPTER 16,

The Yoga of Division between the Divine and the Demoniacal Properties.

श्रीभगवानुवाच — अभयं सत्त्व संशुद्धिः ज्ञानयोगव्यवस्थितः । दानं दमश्च यज्ञश्च स्वाध्यायस्तप आर्जवम् ॥१।\

Sri Bhagavan said ;-Absolute fearlessness, perfect purity of mind , constant fixity in Yoga of meditation, for the sake of self realization, and even so charity in its Sattvika form, ,control of the senses, ,worship of God and other dieties as well as of one’s elders including the performance of Agnihotra (pouring lations into the sacred fire ), and other sacred duties ,study and teaching of the Vedas and other sacred books as well as chanting of God`s names and praises , suffering hardships for te discharge of one`s sacred obligations and straightness of mind as well as of the body and senses.

अहिंसासत्यमक्रोधः त्यागः शान्तिरपैशुनम् । दयाभूतॆष्वलोलुप्त्वंस् मार्दवं ह्रीरचापलम् ॥२॥

Non-violkence in thought, word and deed, truthfullness and geniality of speech, absence of anger even on provocation, disclaiming doership in respect of actions quietitude or composure of mind, ,abstaining from malicious gossip ,compassion towards all creatures absence of attachment to the objects of senses even during their contact with the senses ,mildness, a sense of shame in transgressing against the scriptures or usage, and abstaining from frivolous pursuits;

तेजः क्षमा धृतिः शौचमद्रोहो नातिमानिता । भवन्ति सम्पदं दैवीमभिजातस्य भारत ॥३।\

Sublimity, forbearance, fortitude, external purity,bearing enemity to none, and absence of self -esterem –these are the mark ofhim,who is born with the divine gifts , Arjuna.

दम्भो दर्पोभिमानश्च क्रोधः पारुष्यमेव च । अज्ञानं चाभिजातस्य पार्थ सम्पदमासुरीम् ॥४॥

Hypocrisy, arrogance and pride, ,and anger, sternness, and ignorance too, –these are the marks of him, who is born with demoniac properties.

दैवी सम्पद्विमोक्षाय निबन्धायासुरीमता । मा शुचः सम्पदं दैवीं अभिजातोसि पाण्डव ॥५॥

The dfivine endowment has been recognised as conductive to liberation and the demoniac one as leading to bondage. Grieve not Arjuna, for you are born with the divine propensities.

द्वौ भूतसर्गॊ लोकेsस्मिन्दैव आसुर एव च । दैवो विस्तरशाः प्रोक्त आसुर पार्थमे शृणु ॥ ६॥

There are only two types of men in this world, ,Arjuna, the one possessing a divine nature and the other possessing a demoniac disposition, of these the type possessing divine nature has been dealt with at length, now hear in detail from me about the ty[pe possessing the demoniac disposition.

प्रवृत्त्तिं च निवृत्तिं च जना न विदुरासुराः । न शौचं नापि चाचारो न सत्यं तेषु विद्यते ॥७॥

.Men possessing a demoniac disposition know not what is right activity and what is right abstinence from activity . Hence they possess neither purity nor good conduct nor even truthfulness..

असत्यमप्रतिष्ठं ते जगदाहुरनीश्वरम् । अपरस्परसम्भूतं किमन्यत्कामहैतुकम् ॥८॥

Men possessing a demoniac disposition say this world is without any foundation, absolutely unreal and godless, brought forth by mutual union of the male and female and hence conceived in lust, ; whatelse than this ?

एतां दृष्टिमवष्टभ्य नष्टात्मानोल्पबुद्धयः । प्रभवन्त्युग्रकर्मणः क्षयाय् जगतोहितः ॥९॥

clinging to this false view these slow witted men of a vile disposition and terrible deeds ,enemies of mankind ,prove equal only to the destruction of the Universe,.

काम्माश्रित्य दुष्पूरं दम्भमान मदान्विताः ।मोहाद्गृहीत्वासद् ग्राहान्प्रवर्तन्ते शुचिव्रताः ॥१०॥

Cherishing insatiable desires and embracing false doctrines through ignorance ,these men of impure conduct move in this world ,full of hypocrisy ,pride and arrogance.

चिन्तामपरिमेयां च प्रलयान्तामुपाश्रिताः । कामोपभोगपरमा एताविदिति निश्चिताः ॥११॥

Giving themselves up to innumerable cares ending only with death, they remain devoted to the enjoyment of sensuouspleasures and are positive in their belief that this is the highest limit of joy.

आशापाशाशतैर्बद्धाः कामक्रोधपरायणाः । ईहन्ते कामभॊगार्थमन्यायेनार्थ सञ्चयात् ॥१२॥

Held in bondage by hundreds of ties of expectationand wholly giving themselves up to lust and anger, , they strive to amass by unfair means hoards of money and other objects for the enjoymemt of sensuous pleasures.

इदमद्यमयालब्धं इमं प्राप्स्ये मनोरथम् । इदमस्तीदमपि मे भविष्यति पुनर्धनम् ॥ १३॥

They say to themselves ,“This much has been secured by me todayand now I shall realize this ambition.So much wealth is already with me, and yet again this shall be mine.

असौ मया हतः शत्रुर्हनिष्ये चापरानपि । ईश्वरॊsहमहंभॊगी सिद्धोsहं बलवान्सुखी ॥१४।|

That enwmy has been slain by Me and I shall kill those others too.I am the Lord of all,the enjoyer of all power, I am endowed with all supernatural powers and am mighty and happy,

आढ्यॊsभिजनवानस्मि कोsन्योsस्तिसदृशॊ मया । यक्ष्ये दासुयामि मोदिष्य इत्यज्ञानविमोहितः ॥ १५॥

I am wealthy and own a large family; who else ia equal to me?I will sacrifice to gods, will give alms.I will make merry.Thus blinded by ignorance ,enveloped in the mesh of delusion ,

अनॆक चित्त विभ्रान्ता मोहजालसमावृताः ।प्रसक्ताः कामभोगेषु पतन्ति नरकेsशुचौ ॥१६॥

and addicted to the enjoyment of sensual pleasures, their mind bewildered by numerous thoughts, these men of devilish disposition fall into the foulest hell.

आत्मसम्भाविताः स्तब्धा धनमान मदान्विताः । यजन्ते नामयज्ञैस्ते दम्भोनाविधिपूर्वकम् ॥ १७॥

Intoxicated by wealth and honour ,those self concieted and haughty men worshipGod through sacrifices only in the name for ostentation, without following the sacred rituals.

अहंकारं बलं दर्पं कामं क्रॊधं च सांश्रिताः । मामात्मपरदॆहेषु प्प्रद्विषन्तो भ्यसूयकः ॥१८॥

Given over to egotism , brute force, arrogance, lust and anger etc., and columnating others they dispise Me, (the inner controler of all, ),dwelling in their own bodiesasx well as in those of others.

तानहं द्विषतः क्रीरान्संसारॆषु नराधमान् । क्षिपाम्यजस्रमशुभानासुरीष्यॆव यॊनिषु ॥19 ||

These haters sinful, cruel and vilest among men, I cast again and again, inti demoniacle wombs in this world.

आसुरीं योनिमापन्ना मूढा जन्मनि जन्मनि । मामप्राप्यैव कौन्तेय ततॊ यान्त्यधमां गतिम् ॥२०॥

Failng to reach Me Arjuna, these stupid souls are bornlife after life, in demoniac wombs and then verily sink down,to a still lower plane.

त्रिविधं नरकस्यॆदं द्वारं नाशनमात्मनः ।कामः क्रॊधः तथा लोभः तस्मादॆतत्रयं त्यजेत् ॥२१।।

Desire, anger, and greed these triple gates of hell, bring about the downfall of the soul. Therefore one should shun all these three .

ऎतैर्विमुक्तः कौन्तेय तमोद्वारैस्त्रिभिर्नरः । आचरत्यात्मनः श्रेयस्ततो याति परां गतिंम् ॥ २२॥

Freed from these three gates of hell, ,manworks for his own salvation and thereby attains the supreme goal. i.e., God.

यः शास्त्रविधिमुत्स्रुज्य वर्तते कामकारतः । न स सिद्धिमवाप्नोति न सुखं न परां गतिम् ॥२३।।

Discarding the injunctions of the scriptures ,he who acts in an arbitary wayaccording to his own sweet will ,such a person neither attains perfection nor even happiness.

तस्माच्छास्त्रं प्रमाणं ते लार्याकार्यव्यवस्थितौ । ज्ञात्वा शास्त्रविधानोक्तं कर्मकर्तुमिहार्हसि ॥ २४॥

Therefore the scripture alone is your guide in determining what should be done . Knowing this you ought to perform only such action as is ordained by the scriptures.

ॐ तत्सदिति श्रीमद्भगवद्गीतासु उपनिषत्सु ब्रह्मविद्यायां यॊगशास्त्रे श्री कृष्णार्जुन संवादे 

Thus, in the Upanishad sung by the Lord ,the Science of Brahma, the scripture of vYoga ,the dialiogue between Sri kRishna and Arjuna, ends the sixteenth chapter entitled ~~The Yoga of Division between
