ज्ञानविज्ञानयोगः Chapter 7

अध्याय   ज्ञानविज्ञानयोगः 

The yoga of Jnana (knowledge of Nirguna Brahma ) and Vijnana (Knowledge of manifest Divinity )

श्री भगवानुवाच ;-मय्यासक्तमनाः पार्थ  योगं युञजन्मदाश्रयः ।असंशयं समग्रं मां य्थाज्ञायसि तच्छृणु ॥१॥

Sri Bhagavan said :-Arjuna now listen   with the the mind  intent on Me (through exclusive love)  and practising Yoga  with absolute dependance  on Me, and taking refuge in Me, how thou shalt without doubt    (the repository of all power ,strength  and glory and other attributes  , the Universal  Soul )  know Me fully (without any shadow  of doubt .  )that do thou hear.

ज्ञानं तेहं सविज्ञानमिदं  वक्ष्याम्यशॆषतः ।यज्ञात्वा नेह भूयोन्यज्ज्ञातव्यमवशिष्यते ॥२॥

I shall declare  to you  in its entirety  this wisdom (Knowledge of  God in His absolute formless  aspect), along with the knowledge of  the qualified  aspect of God (both with form and without form ) having known which nothing else remains yet to be known  in this world.

मनुष्याणां सहस्रेषु  कश्चिद्यदति सिद्धये   यततामपि सिद्धानां कश्चिन्मां वॆत्ति तत्त्वतः ॥३॥

Hardly one among thousands of men strives to  realize Me;(for Perfection),   of those striving Yogis again some rare  one (devouting himself exclusively to Me) knows Me in reality.

भूमिरापोनिलो वायुः  खं मनो बुद्धिरेवच ।अहंकार इतीयं मे भिन्ना प्रकृतिरष्टधा ॥४॥

Earth, water, fire,  air ,ether , mind,  reason , intellectand also egoism ; these constitute My nature eight fold divided  .अपरेयमितस्त्वन्यां  प्रकृतिं विद्धि मे पराम् जीवभुतां महाबाहो  ययेदं धार्यते  जगत् ॥५॥

This indeed is My lower  (material) nature.;the other than  this by which the whole universe is sustained know it to be My higher (or spiritual )  nature in the form of Jiva (the life principle ), O Arjuna.

 

एतद्योनीनि भूतानि सर्वाणीत्युपधारय स् अहं कृत्स्नस्य जगतः प्रभवः प्रलयस्तत्था ।॥६॥

Arjuna know that all beings have evolved from this   twofold Prakriti and that I am the source  of the entire creation , and into Me again  it disappears .

मत्तः परतरं  न्यान्यत्किअंचिदस्ति  धनंजय मयि सर्वमिदं  प्रोतं  सूत्रे मणिगणा इव ॥७॥

There is nothing else beside Me , Arjuna,  Like clusters of yarn -beads formed by knots of a thread  all this is threaded on Me.

रसोहमप्सु कौन्तेय  प्रभासि शशिसूर्ययोः ।प्रणवः सर्ववेदेषु शब्दः खे पौरुषं नृषु ॥८॥

Arjuna I am the sapidity in water , and the light of the moon  and the sun; ; I am the sacred syllable OM in all the vedas  the sound in ether  and the manliness in man.

पुण्यो गन्धः पृथिव्यां तेजस्मास्मि विभावसौ जीवनं सर्वभूतेषु  तपश्चास्मि तपस्विषु ॥९॥

I am the pure odour (The subtle principal of odour ) in the earth;  and the brilliance of fire, nay I am the life in all beings, and the austerity  in men of askesis.   

बीजं मां सर्वभूतानां विद्धि पार्थ सनातनम् ।बुद्धिर्बुद्धिमतामस्मि  तेजस्तेजस्विनामहम्, ॥१०॥

Arjuna know Me the eternal seed of  all beings;  I am the intelligence of the intelligent;the glory of the gloriousam I                                                             

बलं बलवता चाहं  कामरागविवर्जितम् ।धर्माविरुद्धो  भूतेषु  कामोस्मि भरतर्षभः ॥११॥

Arjuna  of the mighty  I am themight,free from passion and desire;  in beings I am the sexual desire not conflicting with virtue or scriptural injunctions. 

येचैव सात्त्विका भावा राजसास्तामसाश्च ये   मत्तएवत तान् विद्धि  त्वहं तेषु ते मयि ॥१२॥

Whatever other entities there are born of Sattva,(the quality of goodness), and those that are born of Rajas, (the pinciple of activity, ) and Thamas (the principle of inertia), know them all evolved  from Me alone;

त्रिभिर्गुणमयैर्भावैरेभिः  सर्वमिदं जगत् मोहितं नाभिजानाति मामेभ्यः परमव्ययम् ॥१३॥

 The whole of this creation is deluded by these  objects evolved from  the three modes of Prakriti, Sattva,Rajas, Tamas; that is why the world fails to recognize  Me, standing apart from  these and imperishable.

दैवी ह्येषा गुणमयीऒ मम माया दुरत्यया   मामेवये प्रपद्यन्ते  मायामेतां तरन्ति ते ॥१४॥

For this mind wonderful Maya (veil), of Mine consisting of the threeGunas (modes of nature, ) is extremely difficult to break through, ;those however who constantly adore Me alone are able to cross it.

मां दुष्कृतिनो मूढाः  प्रपद्यन्ते नराधमाः    माययापहृतज्ञाना  आसुरं भावमाश्रितः  ॥१५॥

 Those whose wisdom has been carried away by  Maya, and who have embrased the demoniac nature  , such  foolish and vile men of evil deeds do not adore Me.  

चतुर्विधा भजन्ते मां  जस्नाः सिकृतिनोर्जुन   आर्ती जिज्ञासुरर्थार्थी ज्ञानी भरतर्षभः ॥१६॥

Four types of devotees of noble deeds worship Me , Arjuna,  the seeker of worldly possessions,  ,the afflicted,  the seeker for Knowledge, and the man of wisdom. O, best of Bharatas.

तेषां ज्ञानी नित्ययुक्त एकभक्तिर्विशिष्यते प्रियो हि ज्ञानिनोत्यर्थमहं  मम प्रियः ॥१७॥

Of these the best is the man of wisdom, ever established in identity  with Me, and possessed of exclusive devotion, .For I am extremely  dear to the wise men  (who knows Me in reality), and he is extremely  dear to Me.

उदाराः सर्व एवैते  ज्ञानी त्वात्मैव मे मतम् ।आस्थितः हि युक्तात्मा ममेवानुत्तमां  गतिम् ॥१८॥

Indeed all these are noble, but the men of wisdom if My very self;  such is My view.  For such a devotee  who has his mind and intellect  merged in Me, is firmly established in Me alone., the highest goal.

बहूनां जन्मनामन्ते  ज्ञानवान्मांप्रपद्यते ।वासुदॆवः सर्वमिति  महात्मा सुदुर्लभः   १९॥

In the very last of all births the enlightened soul worships Me,  realizing that all this is God.such a great soul is very rare.

कामैस्तैस्तैर्हृतज्ञानाः   प्रपद्यन्तेन्यदेवताः  ते तं नियममास्थाय  प्रकृत्या नियताः स्वया ॥२०॥

Those whose wisdom has been carried away by various desires  being prompted by their own nature, worship other dieties adopting rules relating to each.

योयोयां यां तनुं भक्तः  श्रद्धायाचिन्तुमिच्छति तस्यतस्याचलां श्रद्धां  तामेव विदधाम्यहम् ॥२१।|

Whatever celestial form a  devotee (craving for some worldly objects, ) chooses to worship with  reverence  I stabilize the faith of that particular devotee in that very form.   

या श्रद्धया  युक्तस्तस्या  राधनमीहते लभतेच ततः कामन्मयैव विहितान् हि तान् ॥२२॥

Endued with that faith he engages in the worship of that DEVATA_and from it he obtains his desire-fulfilments; all this being obtained  , indeed , by,Me.

अन्तवत्तु फलं तेषां  तद्भवत्यल्पमेधसाम् देवां दॆवयजो  यान्ति मद्भक्ता यान्ति मामपि ॥२३॥

Verily the“ fruit ”accrues to those men  of little intelligenceis finite.The worshippers of the Devas go to the DEVAS But My devotees come to Me.

अव्यक्तं व्यक्तमापन्नं  मन्यन्ते मामबुद्धयः परं भावमजानन्तो ममाव्ययमनुत्तमम् ॥२४॥

The foolish think of Me , the Unmanifest, as having come to manifestation, not knowing My higher immutable and peerless natire.

नाहं प्रकाशः सर्वस्य योगमायासमावृतः  मूढॊयं नाभिजानाति  लोकोमामजमव्ययम् ॥२५॥

I am not manifest to all; (in My real Nature), veiled by Divine MayaThis deluided world knows not Me.  , the unborn and imperishable.

 वेदाहं समतीतानि वर्तमानानि चार्जुन भविष्याणि भूतानि मां तु वेद कश्चन ॥२६॥

I know ,O Arjuna, the beings of the past, and present and the future.,but no one knows Me.

इच्छाद्वेष समुत्थेन  द्वन्द्वमोहेन भारत ।सर्वभूतानि संम्मोहं  सर्गे यान्ति परंतप ॥२७॥

By the delution of the pair -of -opposites arising from desire anf and aversion O, Bharata all beings are  subject to delution at birth,  O, Paranthapa, (scorcher of foes).

येषां त्वन्तगतं पापं  जनानां पुण्यकर्मणाम् ते द्वन्द्वमोह्स निर्मुक्ता भजन्तेमां दृढव्रताः ॥२८॥

But those men of virtuous deeds  whose sins have to an end, who are freed  from the delusion of the pairs of  opposites and are dteadfast in in vows,worship Me.

जरामरण मॊक्षाय  मामाश्रित्य  यतन्ति ये ते ब्रह्म तद्विदुः  कृत्स्न मध्यात्मं  कर्मचाखिलम् ॥।२९॥

Those who strive for liberation from old-age, and death, taking refuge in Me, they realise in full, that Brahman the whole knowledge of the Self  and all action. 

साधिभूताधिदैवं  मां साधियज्ञं  ये विदुः ।प्रयाणकालेपि मां तेविदुर्युक्तचेतसः ॥३०॥

Those who know Me, with the ADHIBHUTA, (pertaining to elements the world of objects;)  ADHIDAIVA( pertaining to gods;  the sense organs);  and the ADHIYAJNA(pertaining to the sacrifice; all erception) even at the time of death, steadfast in mind know Me.; 

 ॐ तत्सदिति श्रीमद्भगवद्गीतासु उपनिषत्सु ब्रह्मविद्यायां योगशास्त्रे  श्री कृष्णार्जुन संवादे ज्ञान विज्ञानयोगो नाम  सप्त्यमोध्यायः

Thus in the UPANISHADS of the glorious Bhagavad-Gita in the science of the eternal, in the Scripture of Yoga, in the dialogue between  Sri krisna and Arjuna, the seventh discourse ,ends entitled– “The Yoga of Knowledge and Wisdom .
