VHP holds public meeting for Ram temple……

Togadia still gathering support for Ram Temple

TNN, Dec 20, 2010, 03.00am IST

AHMEDABAD: Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) international general secretary Pravin Togadia has launched a series of public meetings in Gujarat. The meetings will be aimed at garnering more support for Ram Temple issue in Ayodhya from all sections of the society by projecting a different image. Togadia will be part of a series of 108 Maruti Yagnas, which will be organised on December 25 at Ankur cross roads in Naranpura. All the yagnas, said the VHP office bearers, will be performed by Dalit couples. “This is an attempt to drive home a point that Ram Temple is an issue for everybody and people from all sections of the society are rallying behind us,” said a VHP official.

To gather public support for the yagnas, the VHP workers have started a door-todoor campaign. However, unlike previous years, the campaign is being spearheaded by the VHP’s foot soldiers, as no prominent BJP leaders are part of it.

“Keeping Ram Temple construction in mind, these meetings will be held all over Gujarat. We are not appealing to any particular political party or vote bank. And neither are we working for any one political party or its vote bank. This programme is only for Hindutva and we have approached Congress party members too to support us on this issue,” said Togadia. From September, VHP has organised a nation-wide public chanting of Hanuman Chalisa to pray for Ram Temple’s construction. “During the last three months in Gujarat alone, more than 16 lakh people have chanted Hanuman Chalisa,” said Kaushik Mehta, the VHP general secretary, Gujarat. “The chanting concluded in November. After this, the Maruti yagnas started and will continue for the next three months across the country,” said a VHP member. Togadia plans to visit all the yagnas in Gujarat. Togadia’s extended Gujarat trip comes after a gap of six years.

VHP holds public meeting in Jaipur to press for Ram temple

The Ram temple issue is a non-political movement which is related to Indian self-respect and not communal pride, Hindutva activist Sadhvi Ritamhara said here today.

Addressing people at a Dharma Sabha organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Ritambhara said a “magnificent temple” of Ram would be built in Ayodhya.

Criticising allegations of saffron terror and the equating of RSS with SIMI, she said RSS workers have always been ready to face any challenge whenever the country was in trouble.

VHP leader Vinayak Rao said the Muslim community should show generosity and the central government should hand over 70 acres of land under its possession for construction of the Ram temple.

“We are not against Muslims, but they should show generosity and come forward in support of construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya as it is an issue related with a national great personality – Ram,” Rao said.

He said the VHP has met many MPs to press their demand to get a bill passed in the Parliament for construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya.

“Ram is not only a religious character, but a national great personality also. In the Constitution, there is a picture of Ram which establishes that Ram is the subject of nationalism and Muslims should also understand and accept the fact,” he said.

“Students in Indonesia are being taught about the great personality Ram, and Muslims here should contribute to the construction of a Ram temple at his birth place in India,” Rao said.
