Its total population is 7 lakh and 40% of it (about 3 lakh) is Hindu. Many Hindu associations are active here. Their forefathers from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, etc., were taken there over 150 years ago as indentured labor. Under the regimes of frequent coups, the political weight of Hindus there is lessening. Educated Hindus are fleeing the country. The present military regime, however, is positive towards Hindus. Hindus there have established the University of Fiji.


It is active among foreign students including NRI & PIO Hindu students that are studying in Bharat. It organizes annual seminars-cum-culturo-educational tours for and celebrates Hindu festivals involving them. The programs are held in Delhi, Rishikesh-Haridwar, Jaipur and other places. The International Hindu Students Council establishes special contacts with the said NRI & PIO Hindu students to cultivate them so that they more deeply identify with the Bharatiya traditions, culture and global Hindu fraternity.
